Every July, more than 350 young equestrians from across the Lone Star State pack up their trailers and head to Bryan for one of the biggest youth horse competitions in Texas. The Texas State 4-H Horse Show runs July 19–25 at the Brazos County Expo Complex; and if you’ve never watched it, you’re missing out on some serious horsemanship.
Whether you’re here to compete, cheer on a 4-H member you know, or just catch a few classes because you love horses, here’s what to know.
What Is the Texas State 4-H Horse Show?
The Texas 4-H Horse Program is one of the most respected youth development programs in the state, teaching horsemanship, leadership, and life skills to kids across all 254 Texas counties. The State Show is where the best of the best come to compete: up to 40 divisions across a full week of classes, educational sessions, and scholarship opportunities.
Top senior exhibitors compete for custom saddles, belt buckles, bronze trophies, and – most importantly – college scholarships. For many of these kids, this is the biggest competition of their year.
What Can You Watch?
Plenty. The show covers a wide range of disciplines: Western, English, speed events like barrel racing and pole bending, cattle classes including team roping, and equestrian drill team performances. If you’ve never watched a drill team ride, put it on your list. It’s genuinely impressive.
Admission is free for spectators. Show up, find a seat in the bleachers, and enjoy.

For Competitors and Their Families
The Brazos County Expo Complex does have RV sites on the grounds for participants — convenient if you can get one. The catch is they’re first come, first served, and a week-long state show fills up fast.
If you missed out on a spot, or you’d just rather skip the hullabaloo and have a quiet place to decompress after a long day in the arena, Galloping Snail RV Park is right behind the Expo Center on Jones Road, just about a mile away. Close enough to walk back after a long day in the arena, quiet enough to actually get a good night’s rest. Weekly rates available, and we’re a no-frills operation that keeps things simple. We’ve even got private shower suites to wash the dust off at the end of a long day.
For families making the trip to Bryan for the week, having your home base that close to the Expo makes a long show week a lot more manageable.
