Something a little different is happening in downtown Bryan this fall, and it runs nearly the entire month of September. The Queen’s Film Society has teamed up with Texas A&M’s Performance and Visual Studies Program for a little something called Art & Film/Film as Art. It’s part art gallery, part movie series and it runs from August 28th through September 29th.

Here’s the gist of it: Thirteen artists made original works inspired by classic films, and those pieces will be on display at the Kimbell Cultural Event Center on N. Main in  downtown Bryan. Upstairs, you’ll find reproductions of paintings by names like Goya and Caravaggio hung right next to stills from the movies they influenced. If you’ve ever watched a film and thought “that shot looks like a painting” this event is made for you.

The gallery runs the entire stretch: Wednesdays from 2-4PM, Fridays 2-10PM and Saturdays 2-6PM. NSFF warning: the exhibit includes some artwork with nudity, violence or other heavier subject matter, so it’s not really suitable as a family event.

Alongside the gallery, there’s a full lineup of film screenings, each one introduced by a scholar who breaks down how the film borrows from earlier art traditions. The schedule runs across multiple downtown venues, so it’s worth double-checking where you’re headed before you go.

Here’s the films and their locations, *be sure to check the websites for official time:

September 1, The Wings of the Dove, at the Queen Theatre
September 8, Wild Strawberries, at the Kimbell
September 15, Pan’s Labyrinth, at the Kimbell
September 22, Mamma Roma, at the Kimbell
September 24, Liquid Sky, at The 101, free and unticketed
September 29, Bedlam, at the Kimbell
September 30, Sinners, at the Queen Theatre, free tickets through TAMU’s College of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts

The opening reception occurs on Friday August 28th, from 6-10PM, and a closing reception on September 24th. For information about the gallery exhibition, contact Kris Belden-Adams; about the film series, contact Dan Humphrey.

Whether you’re the type who reads all the plaques at a museum, or just likes a good excuse for a night out downtown, this one gives you almost a month to work your way through. Come check out a screening or two, and rest your shells with us after the credits roll.
