If you drove past the Brazos County Expo Complex this week and wondered why there were more cattle trailers than usual, here’s your answer. The Bluebonnet Kick-Off Classic started Tuesday and runs through Saturday, so if you haven’t made it out yet, there’s still time. This event is the second largest Brahman cattle show in the whole country, and it happens right here in Bryan every year.
So what’s the big deal about Brahman cattle anyway? These aren’t your standard black-and-white dairy cow. Brahmans trace back to cattle from India, and you can spot one from a mile off by that distinctive hump over the shoulders and the loose, saggy skin hanging under the neck. That loose skin isn’t just a look. It actually helps the cattle release heat, which is exactly why Brahmans do so well in Texas summers when everything else is wilting. They handle bugs and drought better than most breeds too, and ranchers around here have relied on that toughness for generations.
The Kick-Off Classic marks the official start of the open and junior show season, so this isn’t just any weekend show. Breeders and junior exhibitors from all over the country point to this event as the real kickoff, no pun intended, for the year ahead. New this year, the show added an Open F1 division, which has folks talking. If you’re not up on cattle lingo, F1 just means a first-generation cross, so this new class gives breeders a chance to show off some of their newer bloodlines.
