The Bryan Yard Dogs, Bryan’s brand-new baseball team, played their first home opener on May 21, and it’s been a whirlwind season since then. This inaugural squad competes in the Mid-America League, a summer league that brings together college players and recent graduates. You get real talent, affordable tickets, and a ballpark that got a major upgrade for the occasion.
A Fresh Start for Bryan Baseball
The Yard Dogs took over Travis Major Field after the Brazos Valley Bombers left town following 19 seasons. The city made the most of the opportunity, investing nearly $700,000 in renovations. Upgrades include new turf, a new sound system, and a third-base party deck where fans can spread out and enjoy the game.
The name itself is a nod to Bryan’s roots. In the railroad business, a “yard dog” is the hardworking little engine that moves cars around the rail yard. Tough, steady, and always gets the job done—just like Bryan.
Leading the team is head coach John Byington, a Texas A&M baseball legend and Aggie Hall of Famer. And keeping things fun in the stands, you’ll spot mascot Sledge making the rounds at games.
How the Season Went
The Yard Dogs played a 61-game schedule this year, with 30 games at home. It’s been a summer full of firsts: first pitch, first win, and the first sellout crowd cheering for a team that didn’t even exist a year ago. For a first season, that’s impressive.
Still Time to Catch a Game
The season runs through the end of July, so there are still a few home games left before it wraps up. Tickets cost $8 to $12, making it an easy, relaxed night out whether you’re bringing the family, a date, or just yourself and a bag of peanuts.
